Jack, let's face it, having to pay to read a news article is really annoying. However, more than being annoying, paywalls can further drive inequality.

Daily Kos doesn't lock our content behind paywalls. We depend on donations from our readers and activists to cover our operating expenses. Paywalls leave far too many people without meaningful information about their own communities, government, and political leaders. As Rodney Benson, chair of NYU's Department of Media, Culture, and Communication says about the use of paywalls: "Obviously, long-term, this is going to have tremendously negative civic effects… We're already experiencing those effects." This is especially important as we are approaching a critical national election.

Unfortunately, many news organizations are currently struggling to survive. Many news outlets once depended solely on advertising revenue to cover their operating expenses, but those days are long gone. To make up for that lost revenue, some news outlets charge for access to their stories or expensive subscriptions.

Daily Kos believes that everyone should have access to the news, regardless of their ability to pay. When you make a donation to Daily Kos, it means we can continue to make our content free and accessible to everyone. We realize that not everyone can afford to make a donation. That also means that they wouldn't be able to access our content if we locked it up behind a paywall.
