Today is the first of the month. That means millions of Americans who lost their jobs in the past few weeks are being confronted with a choice: pay my monthly rent or my other life essentials? The injustice in the world has right now is sharply present. It's making one thing very clear: now more than ever, we have to build real political power at every level of government by electing leaders who will fight for us, not special interests. This one’s near and dear to my heart. I’ve known Garrett for years — first through the fossil fuel divestment campaign he led at the University of Notre Dame, then as a leader of official U.S. youth delegations to the UN Climate Negotiations, and most recently as a national leader of Sunrise Movement. Now, Garrett is running for State Representative in his hometown of South Bend, Indiana. Garrett helped Sunrise launch in the Summer of 2017 with a tour across the Midwest and most recently served as our National Press Coordinator.

Garrett represents the best of our movement: he fights relentlessly for his home and the people he loves. He is fighting for better pay for his mom who is a teacher, to protect his multigenerational family farm in Indiana from super-charged floods and droughts, and for everyday people who need a champion in this moment of crisis. I believe in Garrett and I couldn’t be more proud to see him run for office. I hope you’ll join me, Sunrise South Bend, and State Representatives Chloe Maxmin (ME) and Greta Neubauer (WI) for a virtual rally tonight at 6:00 pm ET to help Garrett win this race.

Jamaal has been an educator for 20 years in his community. He's an incredibly inspiring candidate who is generating tons of grassroots support to take on an entrenched establishment incumbent. The future is always on his mind, and education is his top issue. He has a vision to make sure that the students of today are getting trained for the Green New Deal jobs of tomorrow, and is fighting to make that a reality. I had the honor of speaking at his campaign launch event in the Bronx last year, and I couldn’t be more excited to be kicking off this next phase of his campaign with him on Thursday.
