Hi John,

We just got wonderful news! The proposed ban on Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs), commonly referred to as factory farms, has qualified for the ballot in Sonoma County, California! Volunteers with the Coalition to End Factory Farming (CEFF), which includes DxE SF Bay Area, submitted over 37,000 signatures for the ballot initiative earlier this month. The County determined we had over 25,000 valid signatures which is 130% of the signatures we needed. Now, residents will have the chance to vote to protect animals, the planet, and their communities from the harms of factory farming.

*This is the first-ever county ballot measure to ban Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) in the United States. It could have groundbreaking implications for animals everywhere.*

Based on our research, we estimate that Sonoma County has about two dozens CAFOs, confining millions of animals. This includes several facilities where DxE investigators have exposed rampant criminal animal cruelty, such as Reichardt Duck Farm ( [link removed] ) and Perdue's Petaluma Poultry ( [link removed] ). For years, DxE activists have put their freedom on the line to expose animal cruelty and rescue animals from these facilities, with faith that the public would join the fight to protect animals. Now, that fight is taking off! People and groups throughout the community are uniting through this direct democratic process to stop these factory farms.

The Registrar of Voters will now send the initiative to the County Board of Supervisors, which will decide when it will go to a vote. It will most likely be on the November ballot, the same time when residents of Berkeley, California will be voting to ban CAFOs ( [link removed] ).

Stay tuned for more news and ways that you can help make this historic CAFO ban a success.
Cassie
