Hey friend,

By 2050, the daily average temperature across California is projected to rise by around five degrees Fahrenheit. That means in addition to longer summer and deadlier heat waves, we will, unfortunately, be facing more uncontrollable and more unpredictable wildfires.

But did you know that the best solution to preventing these extreme wildfires is actually … fire?

Prescribed burns have been practiced by Indigenous people and cultural fire practitioners in California for centuries to ensure a healthy forest and ecosystem. They are the most effective tool to prevent excess fuel buildups, which cause the massive, out-of-control fires we see today that ravage landscapes and communities.

Please check out our latest blog post to learn about the many benefits of prescribed burns, as well as what is being done right now to make prescribed burning practices a widespread policy in California →

While we are working hard every day to lower California’s emissions and prevent climate change from getting any worse, some effects will be unavoidable.

Alongside efforts to curb emissions, we need to also advocate for resilience from extreme heat, poor water and air quality, and wildfires, especially for California’s most vulnerable residents.

Right now, EnviroVoters is pushing for funding for resilience centers in the California Climate Bond of 2024, and for bills like Senator Monique Limón’s SB 1101 to expand controlled burn policies. We can empower communities to protect their neighborhoods and buildings from the effects of smoke and extreme heat while helping the state use better proactive fire measures to protect millions of lives across the state.
