Imagine this: high above the clouds, a billionaire reclines in the plush seat of their private jet, sipping champagne as the world whizzes by far below. The pilot will take them wherever they want to go and whenever they want to go there. Yet, despite this significant carbon footprint, they currently pay $0 for their emissions.
Well, that could all change very soon. President Biden has unveiled a new plan to update how corporate jets are taxed and curb the rapid write-offs corporations currently enjoy when purchasing these jets. He’s also proposing an increase on taxes for private jet fuel.
The Biden administration’s newly released budget proposal seeks to collect $4 billion over the next decade from new taxes on corporate jets.
These reforms are designed to reduce excessive corporate air travel and deter unnecessary fuel emissions that contribute significantly to our air pollution and climate change.
