I won’t sugarcoat the truth: we already face an uphill battle. Several states — including crucial battlegrounds like Florida, North Carolina, and Texas — entered the new year with racially and politically biased maps. At the same time, anti-democratic forces are still advancing legal challenges that threaten to undermine the Voting Rights Act of 1965 — the crown jewel of the civil rights movement.

These affronts to our democracy are part of extreme anti-democratic forces’ decades-long effort to silence the voices of their opposition — especially people of color — and unfairly manipulate the rules to keep extremist, right-wing politicians in power. But this year, we have an opportunity to push back.
