In her Narrative Matters essay featured in the March issue of Health Affairs, Kara Ayik documents her son’s rare disease diagnosis journey ([link removed] ) .

Ayik writes about the lack of autonomy and support from physicians she feels as she and her son visit doctors in search of a diagnosis.

She writes about the lasting medical trauma her son experienced as the result of a liver biopsy that she felt pressured to agree to, even though his eventual diagnosis, acid sphingomyelinase deficiency (ASMD) was identified with a straightforward blood test.

Ayik concludes by calling for parents and caregivers to research and be active advocates for their children.
