J Street

Dear Friends,

Our Word on the Street conversation series returns this Friday with Avner Gvaryahu – a former IDF sergeant who now runs Breaking the Silence, an organization of IDF veterans who speak out against excessive force and oppose permanent military occupation.

Available exclusively to monthly donors and members of our National Leadership Circle – Avner will join J Street President Jeremy Ben-Ami to discuss the Israeli military campaign in Gaza, its devastating impact on Palestinian civilians, the prospect for hostage releases, and the path out of what is increasingly looking like a catastrophic military quagmire. Avner will also share more about his recent article in Foreign Affairs, The Myth of Israel’s ‘Moral Army’.

To join this Friday’s 12pm Eastern Word on The Street call – and for invites to all future calls – click “make it monthly” at the following link to set a recurring donation of $10 or more. Set up your monthly contribution now >>

You’ll also receive access to our library of previous conversations, with guests like former Vermont Governor Howard Dean, New York Times Columnist Nick Kristof, Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Congresswoman Becca Balint.

By joining together, our monthly donors are helping to fuel long-term progress – both when our issue is out of the headlines, and when it’s all too painfully front-and-center.

As Avner said in his recent article, “An investigation of prior campaigns in Gaza reveals the inadequacy of Israeli targeting guidelines, which do not truly curb civilian casualties... In the latest round of fighting in Gaza, Israel has failed to follow even those restrictions – leading to untold devastation and making a resolution to the conflict even harder to reach.”

“Past wars help pierce the fog of the present one,” he wrote, sharing the in-depth findings and failings that Breaking the Silence has uncovered through years of gathering, investigating and sharing soldiers’ testimonies from previous Gaza campaigns.

In Friday’s can’t-miss conversation, he’ll also take us behind the curtain and help us understand what we’re seeing in the West Bank. Amid the ongoing war in Gaza and since October 7, the already volatile situation in the West Bank has deteriorated with increasing settler violence, forced displacement and ongoing settlement expansion.

Register for monthly giving now and keep an eye on your inbox for a Zoom invitation for the conversation.

It will be held at 12pm Eastern / 9am Pacific this Friday, and will be available on-demand to eligible supporters thereafter.

Thank you for your ongoing support,

Nate Wolfson
