News from Congressman Mike Levin

Dear Neighbor,

There’s been a lot going on in Washington lately, and I wanted to share some of what I’ve been working on for our district, as well as a few other updates.

Community Project Funding

I had the pleasure to announce that I helped secure over $17.7 million in new federal funding for 15 projects and priorities in our district. These funds were allocated as part of the government funding bill signed by President Biden to fund the government through September 30, 2024. These funds will go towards crucial infrastructure and other public projects.

Energy Week

Last week, House Republicans’ dirty “Energy Week” was filled with horrendous legislation to lock in polluting fossil fuel energy. The so-called Protecting American Energy Production Act (H.R. 1121) and the Restoring American Energy Dominance Act (H.R. 6009) both passed the House but are dead on arrival in the Senate. I spoke on the House Floor in opposition to these misleadingly named bills; one would shamelessly give away our public lands to Big Oil companies to drill and force the American taxpayer to pay for the cleanup, while the other would unacceptably limit the President’s ability to respond to public health, environmental, and climate risks.

Filing Taxes

Tax Day is Monday, April 15 this year. For those who were impacted by the January storms, IRS approved a request from Governor Gavin Newsom, which I supported, to extend tax deadlines for California taxpayers in San Diego County to June 17, 2024.

And thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act, you may be eligible for clean energy tax credits. Visit my website to see if you qualify.

The IRS has also introduced a new Direct File pilot program, and California taxpayers are eligible to participate. To learn more about this program, click here.

Uncheck the Box Act

Recently, I reintroduced a bipartisan bill that would protect Americans from deceitful campaign tactics, ensuring contributors aren’t cheated out of thousands of dollars.

My Uncheck the Box Act, which I introduced with Rep. Nick LaLota of New York, bans “pre-checked boxes” to solicit recurring campaign contributions. This practice forces Americans to contribute thousands of dollars to political campaigns on both sides of the aisle without their affirmative consent. It is unacceptable.

Plastic Pellet Free Waters Act

Earlier this month, I introduced the Plastic Pellet Free Waters Act with Rep. Mary Peltola of Alaska to address plastic pollution in our nation’s waterways and along our coasts.

Plastic pellets are microplastics that threaten our ecosystems. They absorb toxic chemicals and attract harmful bacteria that threatens marine life. Seabirds, fish, and other wildlife often mistake these pellets for food, ingesting these harmful substances. This bill would prevent further ecological and public health harm from plastic pollution by requiring the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to issue a rule addressing plastic pellets.

GI Parity Bill

I also reintroduced the Guard and Reserve GI Bill Parity Act of 2024 with House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Ranking Member Mark Takano of California to ensure National Guard and Reserve servicemembers receive post-9/11 GI Bill eligibility for every day they spend in uniform.

Our Guard and Reservists deserve to receive credit for every day they serve. This includes each day conducting operations, fulfilling weekend drill and annual training requirements, or responding to national disasters.
