The Pebble Mine would be catastrophic. This match expires

Dear NRDC Supporter,

There's a reason the Pebble Mine has received fierce
bipartisan opposition for decades:

It's that bad.

Now, a dark-horse investor has pledged $60 million to back
mining company Northern Dynasty Minerals' latest legal campaign
to unravel protections for Alaska's Bristol Bay so they can build
their massive gold and copper mine.

Bristol Bay's future is hanging in the balance, and our
emergency match expires Saturday. We still need your support, .

Donate $5 by March 30 and your gift will DOUBLE, up to
$50,000, to help save the magnificent wilderness of Bristol Bay
and protect our environment. ( [link removed] )

What's so bad about Pebble Mine that it would inspire
broad, bipartisan opposition, including from Alaska's Republican
senators?

* The mine would generate up to 10 billion tons of toxic waste —
the equivalent of 2,500 pounds for every living person — stored
in an earthquake zone at the headwaters of the world's greatest
salmon fishery
* There is no safe way to store this waste: A supposedly
fail-proof dam at another mineral mine in Canada failed
catastrophically, causing an environmental disaster
* A dam failure could decimate Bristol Bay's wild salmon runs,
which generate $2.2 billion in revenue, support 15,000 jobs, and
sustain an astounding array of wildlife, from belugas and bears
to lynx and eagles

The strength of our Bristol Bay legal defense rests upon
the kind of support we can muster today:

Donate by midnight on Saturday and your gift will be
MATCHED $1-for-$1, up to our goal of $50,000, to fuel our legal
battle against the Pebble Mine and defend one of our planet's
greatest ecosystems. ( [link removed] )

For decades, you and other NRDC supporters fought alongside
Alaskan Tribes, and the Yup'ik, Dena'ina, and Alutiiq people in
Bristol Bay, to secure permanent protections for this spectacular
watershed.

Time and again, we've won: First, by forcing other mining
giants to give up on the project... and then, by convincing heads
of critical environmental agencies across three different
administrations that this mine poses an existential threat.

Say you'll support us once more as we work to drive a stake
through the heart of this nightmare project once and for all. ( [link removed] )

Sincerely,

Taryn Kiekow Heimer
