Dear Friend,

Did you know that close to 27 million Americans in the private sector
don’t have access to annual paid time off? [ [link removed] ]

Moms and families are making impossible choices when a child gets sick or
a parent needs care. Most moms are taking care of their families and loved
ones while holding the jobs to make ends meet and pay the bills. And moms
and families also deserve time off to take their pet to the vet, attend
their child’s recital, or simply take a needed break. All workers deserve
time off.

→ [1]That’s why we’re calling for Protected Time Off for workers and
urging Congress to pass the Protected Time Off (PTO) Act right away. Take
action now!

On March 20, 2024, MomsRising’s own Ruth Martin, Senior Vice President,
joined members of Congress, U.S. Representatives Seth Magaziner (RI-02),
Nikki Budzinski (IL-13), Greg Casar (TX-35), and Jasmine Crockett (TX-30)
on the steps of the Capitol as they introduced the Protected Time Off
(PTO) Act. If passed, this bill would guarantee workers have a right to
earn paid annual leave.

Passing the Protected Time Off (PTO) Act would mean moms and families
won’t have to make impossible choices when a child gets sick or a parent
needs care. Paid annual leave for all workers is not a privilege. All
workers deserve to have time off whether it’s to spend time with their
loved ones, go to a doctor’s appointment, run errands or take a much
needed break.

→ [ [link removed] ]Urge Congress to pass the Protected Time Off (PTO) Act so all workers
who put in a hard day’s work can earn paid annual leave in addition to any
paid sick leave or family and medical leave.

Why is this important? Working people need rest and recovery time and the
effects of not having paid time off, and not taking vacation, could have
detrimental effects on employees. According to the Society of Human
Resource Management, employee vacations are critical for not only the
individual and their family, but also the employer and business. Ensuring
employees have annual paid time off days could mean fewer sick days, lower
healthcare costs and less turnover. It could also reduce an employee’s
stress levels, increase productivity and cut their risks for heart
attacks. [2]

The United States is the only advanced economy that does not guarantee
paid time off or vacation days to its workers, falling behind many of the
world’s rich nations. The lack of paid time off days is vital for all
workers; those in smaller businesses are less likely to have any paid
vacation days than those employed in medium and large businesses and only
49 percent of low-wage workers have paid vacation compared to 90 percent
of higher wage earners. [ [link removed] ]

→ [3]Urge Congress to pass the Protected Time Off (PTO) Act so all workers
who put in a hard day’s work can earn paid annual leave in addition to any
paid sick leave or family and medical leave.

Please take a moment to share this action [ [link removed] ]link and let your member of
Congress know we need their support of the Protected Time Off (PTO) Act
which will ensure all working people have access to annual paid time off
days, are protected against discrimination for taking paid time off and
can use that time off in addition to any paid sick leave or family and
medical leave already guaranteed by law.

Thanks for all you do,
