Upcoming Stream Smart Workshops

Maine Audubon is hosting a Stream Smart workshops in Greenville, Fort Kent, and Presque Isle to learn about: the value of free-flowing streams; the regulations that are applicable when working on road/stream crossings; the principles of building Stream Smart crossings; the costs and benefits of Stream Smart crossings; and where to look for funding. 

Maine Audubon works with partners all across the state to provide training on how to construct culverts and bridges that restore and maintain fish and wildlife habitat while also protecting roads and public safety. Maine Audubon offers introductory workshops as well as hands-on field trainings for road professionals. 

This workshop is designed for professionals responsible for road-stream crossings 


* We will cover road-stream crossing projects from site assessment to permitting and installation. 
* Emphasis is on maintaining and restoring aquatic habitat and economic values of the stream. 
* Workshop presenters include professionals from state and federal agencies and statewide non-profits. 
* Participants can receive recertification credit for Maine DEP's Voluntary Contractor Certification Program.

*Location*: Greenville Public Safety, 10 Minden Street, Greenville, ME

*Date*: May 8, 2024 8:30AM to 3:00PM 

*Location*: Natural Resources Conservation Service, 735 Maine Street, Presque Isle, ME

The Menacing Moth of Maine: Understanding Browntail Moth and Their Outbreaks

*Date*: Monday, April 1 

*Time*: 1:00PM to 3:00PM 

*Location*: virtually via Zoom and in-person at 107 Norman Smith Hall, UMaine. 

*Presenter*: Angela Mech, Assistant Prof. of Forest Entomology for the School of Biology and Ecology, University of Maine 

Since 2015, the browntail moth outbreak in Maine has left residents and visitors alike itching for a solution. Despiteits presence in Maine for over a century, various changes, including shifts in climate, policies, and management practices, have rendered this outbreak uniquely challenging. Learn not only about the history and ecology of this tree pest, but also the research being conducted to help find a solution for this irritating insect.
