The government is funded! Hooray!
------------------------------------------------------------
After many months of kicking the can down the road, Congress has finally passed the second half of the funding package for the 2024 fiscal year. The full text of the bill is available at congress.gov ([link removed]) . The fiscal year runs through September, so we’ll be back in this situation again in six months, but in the meantime, the government will remain open and implementing President Biden’s progressive agenda.

The House Appropriations Committee Democrats have a couple of fact sheets about Democratic victories in the funding package, which are here ([link removed]) and here ([link removed]) . Some of these victories include blocking MAGA-Republican poison pills we’ve been calling to oppose. Among the highlights from those two fact sheets:
* “Rejects House Republicans’ proposed cuts of more than 22% and does not include hundreds of the harmful, discriminatory policies that would have hurt Americans.”
* “Supports efforts to ensure billionaires and the biggest corporations pay their taxes by protecting enforcement funds from extreme House Republican cuts.”
* “Protects women’s rights by blocking 10 extreme Republican riders that would limit women’s reproductive care.”
* Funds WIC, child care, Head Start, the Small Business Administration, research into cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, investments in clean energy and science, rail and transit infrastructure, housing assistance, and water infrastructure.

It’s thanks to you that our Members of Congress were able to stand against MAGA hostage-taking and pass a bill that funds the government while limiting the harm that MAGA Republicans sought to do. Thank you for calling your Members of Congress and ensuring that they serve us, the people.

** Concerned about your reproductive rights? Now is the time to get informed.
------------------------------------------------------------
Yesterday, the Supreme Court heard arguments in a case that could result in the banning of the abortion pill ([link removed]) Mifepristone. While several states have already banned abortions, Californians are still safe—but this court case could put us at risk. This shaky case has been laundered through some of the country's most corrupt and regressive courts, but its claims are so unfounded that even the Supreme Court justices have reportedly seemed skeptical.

So, don’t panic. Instead, get informed. We will be going deeper on the current state of reproductive rights and abortion access in a future newsletter, but in the meantime, you can read up on abortion pills and your options at Self-Managed Abortion Safe and Supported ([link removed]) . And, for more facts about abortion care, Planned Parenthood has put out an excellent explainer ([link removed]) on the issues.

** Over 65? It's time for your spring COVID-19 shot
------------------------------------------------------------
If you're 65 years of age or older, you need to renew your protection against COVID-19 more frequently than younger folks. So last week the CDC recommended that you get another COVID-19 shot if it's been more than four months since your previous COVID-19 vaccination.

Folks who've had a rough time with the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines may want to try Novavax, as some recipients have reported less severe side effects than with the mRNA-based vaccines.

Whichever COVID-19 shot you go with, it should be covered by your insurance. If you're uninsured, the CDC's Bridge Access Program covers the cost at participating pharmacies. For a pharmacy near you that's offering COVID-19 shots, visit [link removed].

Volunteers welcome: We’re looking for an Editor and a Social Media Person!
------------------------------------------------------------

This year is going to be a busy time, and we’d love a few more volunteers on board to help with editing our weekly newsletter and publishing ongoing social media posts.

Our newsletter team meets every Tuesday night, and our editor helps us make sure everything looks professional, all the links work, and all the commas are in the right places.

Several members of our team post on various social media websites (Twitter, Mastodon, Instagram, etc.). This is more of an ad-hoc role. We especially would like someone to help us create, schedule, and monitor posts on the Meta Suite (Facebook and Instagram) and Threads. No prior knowledge required—we can train you!

If you’re interested in volunteering, let us know at [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) .

Mile Marker Six: Thursday, April 4, 7–8 PM. California Grassroots Alliance will host guest speakers from the six districts they’re working on winning in order to take back the House. Hear about how the primary election went from the people who worked on it—and their plans for how we’ll win in October. RSVP here. ([link removed])

Central Valley Matters Fundraiser with Jane Fonda and Dolores Huerta: Thursday, April 25, 5–6 PM. Join us on April 25th when we gather in support of Central Valley Matters’ grassroots groups!
