Dear John,

We must ensure scientists can work together across Europe.

We must be certain we can maintain vital links to cross-border research programmes and fellowships. That’s why I’m calling for an extension to the transition period.

Now we've left the EU, we have until the end of the year to negotiate our future relationship with our nearest neighbours. As it stands, our scientists and technology companies will be barred from working with the biggest and best scientific organisations.

That is, unless we request an extension for the transition period and make a commitment to scientific co-operation now.

Let’s protect scientific co-operation <[link removed]>

As the world pulls together to tackle the coronavirus pandemic, the need for scientists, technology companies and healthcare professionals to freely exchange research and ideas has never been clearer. Let’s give British scientists the chance to work with the world.

The scientific community would be the first to agree our foremost priority should be beating the pandemic – they are on the front lines of this fight. <[link removed]>

It simply isn’t reasonable to secure a comprehensive deal with the EU which protects scientific co-operation, while simultaneously tackling a global crisis.

We still have the opportunity to participate in world-renowned organisations like the European Research Council - but only if we act quickly. <[link removed]> We must request an extension by 30 June. That means we have less than 3 months left.

Sign to extend transition! <[link removed]>

Join me in calling on the government and your MP to stand up for scientific co-operation and extend transition. We have the opportunity to be part of live-saving medicines, collaborative space exploration and technologies that could change the world. <[link removed]>

Let’s make sure our scientists can share knowledge and resources freely. Now more than ever, we must work as one, not only to survive, but to thrive.

Best wishes,

Cary Mitchell
