I hope this newsletter finds you and your family well!
This week is Holy Week - the most sacred period in the liturgical calendar - which commemorates the final week of Jesus Christ's life, from his triumphant entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday to his crucifixion on Good Friday, culminating in his resurrection on Easter Sunday.
It is a time of profound reflection, prayer, and solemn rituals for Christians worldwide, as they journey spiritually through the events leading to the redemption of humanity. Through various services and traditions, Holy Week offers us an opportunity to deepen our faith and embrace the central tenets of Christian doctrine: sacrifice, forgiveness, and the promise of eternal life. Wishing all a blessed Holy Week.

Last week was Energy Week in the House, and House Republicans continued our work to push back on Biden's failed energy policies by passing a number of bills including: This effort was necessary because before Joe Biden assumed office, the United States achieved energy independence and even became a net exporter of energy. However, as soon Biden took office, his administration launched a comprehensive attack on the American energy sector. This attack included the termination of the Keystone XL pipeline project, which could have provided 830,000 barrels per day of oil from Canada to U.S. refineries. Additionally, the administration announced the cessation of court-ordered offshore oil and gas lease sales in the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska, along with the delay of thousands of pending Applications for Permits to Drill. These actions, coupled with regulatory burdens, hindered the establishment of new large-scale refineries and disincentivized investment in domestic energy producers.
As a result of these policies, an energy crisis emerged, leading to historic highs in fuel prices. Instead of promoting domestic energy production, President Biden sought assistance from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC+) to increase oil production. However, OPEC+ responded by reducing production, which exacerbated America's energy crisis.
In an ill-fated attempt to control prices, the Biden Administration tapped into America’s strategic petroleum reserve (SPR), originally intended for emergencies. However, this move not only failed to alleviate energy prices but also compromised national security by depleting the reserve to its lowest level since 1986. Moreover, a portion of the SPR was sold to a Chinese government-owned gas company, further undermining our national interests.
Ultimately, as Americans grappled with soaring gas prices, President Biden's energy policies not only failed to address the crisis but also jeopardized national security and prioritized foreign interests over domestic concerns.
As you may recall, House Republicans passed our signature legislation, H.R. 1 – the Lower Energy Costs Act – in March of 2023. This important legislation would completely reverse course from Joe Biden’s disastrous policies that have destroyed American energy independence and made our country more reliant on foreign energy – and caused folks across the country to struggle from record high prices.
If signed into law, the Lower Energy Costs Act would lower annual energy costs by $795 per household by bringing American energy dominance. This essential bill increases domestic energy production, reverses Biden's anti-energy policies, streamlines energy infrastructure and exports, and boosts the production and processing of critical minerals.
House Republicans are taking action and fighting back against Biden's war on American energy. We must restore American energy dominance.

Last Wednesday, the Ways and Means Committee held a hearing with the the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra. The purpose of this hearing was to examine the policy proposals in the HHS Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 budget request, in addition to holding HHS Secretary Becerra and the Biden Administration accountable for choosing to prioritize politics over patients. The proposed policies in President Biden’s FY 2025 budget double down on the administration’s cures-killing agenda, limit access to innovative treatments, promote one-size-fits-all health care, use budget gimmicks to falsely claim Medicare solvency, and leave taxpayers on the hook for Obamacare subsidies for the wealthy.
During my remarks, I discussed the importance of Congressional action to address antimicrobial resistance and highlighted my legislation, the Pioneering Antimicrobial Subscriptions to End Upsurging Resistance (PASTEUR) Act, which encourages innovative drug development targeting the most threatening infections, improves the appropriate use of antibiotics, and ensures domestic availability of antibiotics when needed.

Last Thursday, the House Budget Committee held a hearing entitled, “The President’s Fiscal Year 2025 Budget Request.” The United States Office of Management and Budget Director Shalanda Young appeared before the committee to testify on the President’s requests.
No longer can our country continue to spend at the exorbitant rate that we've been spending – and House Republicans are taking realistic steps to get America’s fiscal house in order. Our Fiscal Year 2025 budget reverses Biden’s out-of-control spending, reins in mandatory spending and unleashes economic prosperity, routes out waste and fraud, ensures the safety of the American people, and prioritizes individual liberty and freedom. We are taking bold action so the next generation has a brighter future.

Following the Budget hearing on Thursday, the Social Security Subcommittee and Work & Welfare Subcommittee held a joint hearing with newly confirmed Commissioner of Social Security, Martin O’Malley, to discuss needed improvements on how the Social Security Administration (SSA) serves the public, opportunities for the SSA to strengthen work incentives and employment support, and the President’s Fiscal Year 2025 budget request. As Chairman of the Social Security Subcommittee, I led this important hearing.
