John, Maine’s Senate passed National Popular Vote! Now, I need your help to bring this bill across the finish line, AND bring NPV to as many states as possible this year.
National Popular Vote is the best solution to our broken Electoral College. Once it’s passed, no one will be able to win the presidency without the majority of Americans’ support – like George W. Bush did in 2000 and Donald Trump did in 2016.
And that’s not all – because of the Electoral College, two-thirds of voters are totally ignored by presidential campaigns!
That’s because the Electoral College incentivizes candidates to visit and spend their campaign dollars in just a handful of swing states. But with the exciting progress in Maine, we’re closer than ever to fixing this for good.
You see, the Constitution lets states decide how to award their own Electoral College votes, which means that once enough states pass NPV, every state that’s signed on will agree to award theirs to whoever wins the popular vote nationwide – giving that candidate the 270 required to win the presidency.
John, it’s not just Maine we have our sights set on. We also have an NPV bill moving in Michigan as I write you. Common Cause members like you laid the groundwork for the bill last year – sending messages, calling legislators, and donating – and we’re working to get it fully passed this session.
If we successfully bring Michigan and Maine on board this year, only 46 electoral votes will stand between you, me, and the solution to our Electoral College problem. That gap was 134 votes just 10 years ago! Now, after a decade of slow and steady progress, victory is in sight.
Our strategy to pass NPV works: we identify states where we can win, then we pull out all the stops and focus our nationwide grassroots efforts to get it done. Just look at our track record: last year, we passed NPV in Minnesota – and passed it in Colorado, New Mexico, Delaware, and Oregon before that!
