Biden Promises to Travel to Baltimore Amid Bridge Collapse, Says the Federal Government Will Pay to Rebuild Bridge

CBS: President Biden said Tuesday that he believes the federal government should pay for the entire cost of the reconstruction of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, which collapsed when a container ship crashed into it earlier Tuesday. Sen. Chris Van Hollen, a Maryland Democrat, said Mr. Biden has “pledged the full support of the federal government.” Hollen said it’s a top priority to clear the channel under the bridge because thousands of jobs are “immediately at stake,” which could have a ripple effect on the wider economy (CBS). National Review: Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said Tuesday eight people were on the bridge when it collapsed and two of those individuals have been rescued. One of them is in the hospital and the other did not suffer injuries. Six people remain unaccounted for (National Review). Townhall: REPORTER: “Do you plan to go to Baltimore? And, if so, how quickly?” BIDEN: “I do, and as quickly as I can” (X).

Fairfax County to Celebrate Transgender Visibility Day on Easter Sunday
Washington Examiner: Last week, Democrats on Fairfax County‘s board of supervisors voted to designate Easter Sunday as Transgender Visibility Day. The proclamation goes far beyond the supposed intent of making transgender people and gender ideology activists feel seen. Members of the board are also sending a message to Christians that they do not matter as they turn one of their holiest days into a celebration of an ideology that undermines the church’s core convictions (Washington Examiner). Fox News: The Fairfax Board of Supervisors voted 9-0 in favor of the proclamation last week (Fox News).

NBC News Fires Ronna McDaniel After Employee Revolt
Wall Street Journal: NBC News cut ties with Ronna McDaniel mere days after it hired the former Republican National Committee chairwoman as a contributor, a dramatic about-face that followed a very public rebuke from some of its biggest stars. The move, which was announced Tuesday afternoon in a memo, caps a frantic four days for NBC News, which had looked to bring in a conservative voice to its political coverage ahead of the presidential election but instead became the target of broad condemnations from observers and employees alike.  McDaniel’s close ties to former President Donald Trump and her support of his efforts to challenge the 2020 presidential election results led several high-profile anchors including Rachel Maddow and Joe Scarborough to use their shows on Monday to decry the hiring (Wall Street Journal).

NYC Begins Handing Out Prepaid Cards to Illegals
New York Post: The Adams administration launched its program to give prepaid debit cards to New York City migrants this week — two months after inking a controversial no-bid $53 million contract for the deal. Staffers with the New Jersey company, Mobility Capital Finance, handed out eight preloaded Mastercards at the Roosevelt Hotel on Monday as part of its pilot program that will expand to 115 cards by next week. The administration scaled back the original plan, which would have loaded up the cards with a month’s worth of money for food and baby supplies. Cash will now need to be replenished each week (New York Post). Charlie Kirk: How much could your family do with an extra $1,400 a month (almost $17,000 a year)? Because that’s what New York City is giving away to migrants as a prize for coming here illegally. Also, a startup founded by a former JP Morgan banker gets a $2 million no-bid contract for distributing the money. America’s wealth took two and a half centuries to build, and now everyone is allowed to plunder it except for you (X).

Illegal Immigrant Children Flood NYC Schools Forcing Special Needs Students Out of Classrooms
Townhall: A massive influx of illegal immigrant children in Manhattan schools may push a school for children with disabilities and special needs out of an academic building and into an “inadequate” site. The school, West Prep Academy, reportedly serves 170 students, which mainly include children with special needs. West Prep is being overrun by the enrollment at PS 145, which shares the same schoolhouse. PS 145 has enrolled lots of illegal immigrant children, reportedly “flooding” the system. Reportedly, more than 30,000 migrant children have been sent to public schools in New York City in recent years (Townhall). New York Post: City Education Department officials are offering the academy a new landing spot, but the only option the school has been given is an aging nearby building with no outdoor space, a gym that doubles as an auditorium and no adequate accommodations for its disabled and special needs kids. That building, once the home of the now-shuttered Ascension School on 108th Street, would be the academy’s new home for the 2024-2025 school year — despite having no upgrades or modifications (New York Post).

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Selects Radical Leftist as VP Running Mate
Wall Street Journal: Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has picked Nicole Shanahan, a California-based attorney who was previously married to Google co-founder Sergey Brin, as his running mate for his long-shot presidential bid, according to people familiar with the decision. Shanahan, 38, also runs a foundation focused on reproductive rights, criminal justice and the environment. Before backing Kennedy’s independent bid, Shanahan had previously been a donor to Democratic campaigns, including supporting Joe Biden’s election in 2020 (Wall Street Journal). Charlie Kirk: RFK’s VP choice, Nicole Shanahan, is a six-figure donor to… George Gascon, the pro-crime, Soros-backed prosecutor who helped wreck San Francisco and is currently wrecking LA. She also spent big on Measure J, a Los Angeles measure to reroute spending from law enforcement and prisons to “social services” and “mental health treatment” — in other words, not putting criminals and dangerous psychos behind bars. This is a far-left pick by RFK, who is apparently looking to shore up his progressive bona fides. Major red flag for commonsense independents and centrist voters who are also sick of rising crime but intrigued by his campaign (X).

Illegal Immigrant Murders 25-Year-Old Girl in Carjacking Attempt
New York Post: An illegal immigrant from Mexico has been accused of killing a 25-year-old Michigan woman in a drunken carjacking attempt — and is awaiting arraignment on an open murder charge. Although Michigan State Police have not released information about a suspect in custody, he was identified as Brandon Ortiz-Vite, a 25-year-old illegal immigrant from Puebla, Mexico. He is expected to be arraigned on charges of homicide/open murder, carjacking, felony firearm, illegally carrying a concealed weapon, operating while intoxicated, and driving on a suspended or revoked license (New York Post). Libs of TikTok: Governor Whitmer put out 5 tweets about George Floyd but hasn’t said a single word about Ruby Garcia, an innocent 25-year-old woman who was murdered in her state by an illegal. SAY HER NAME! Ruby Garcia! Her life mattered (X)!

NYPD Officer Shot, Killed by Career Criminal With 21 Prior Arrests
New York Post: A 31-year-old NYPD cop was shot and killed by a career criminal during a traffic stop in Queens on Monday evening in a “senseless act of violence,” officials and law enforcement sources said. Officer Jonathan Diller, a married father of a 1-year-old boy, was shot in the stomach after police tried to remove the suspect, identified by sources as 34-year-old Guy Rivera, from the passenger seat of the car. Diller’s partner returned gunfire and struck Rivera, who has 21 prior arrests, in the back. Diller was rushed in critical condition to Jamaica Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead (New York Post). Associated Press: The slaying was the first of an NYPD officer since 2022, when two officers, Wilbert Mora, 27, and Jason Rivera, 22, were ambushed in a Harlem apartment building after responding to a domestic disturbance call (Associated Press).

Ireland’s Hate Speech Law Denounced by Party That Passed the Legislation
National Review: Sinn Fein, the largest party in opposition have now done a complete about-face on Ireland’s Hate Speech Law. Eleven months ago, every single Sinn Fein TD voted to pass the legislation. Their party manifesto made passing such a law a top priority. The law, which allows the government to punish speech that protected groups “may” find offensive, even if you have not uttered or published that speech (mere possession counts), has drawn concerned comments from around the world. “It is abundantly clear that this legislation has been badly thought through and is not fit for purpose. It must not proceed,” says Pa Daly, Sinn Fein’s TD for Kerry. Elected Ireland has lost its feel for the electorate and is now scrambling to catch up to the polls (National Review).

NYC to Assign 800 Police Officers to the Subway Tunnels
Fox News: New York City plans to intensify a crackdown on subway fare-beating by sending at least 800 police officers specifically to keep watch on turnstiles, officials announced Monday. It’s the latest in a string of recent moves to address concerns about safety and unruliness in the nation’s busiest subway system. The NYPD said earlier Monday it plans to deploy hundreds of uniformed and plainclothes officers this week to deter fare evasion (Fox News). HotAir: Fare evasion obviously sounds like a far less serious threat to society than armed robbery or attempted murder. If someone is willing to disregard the signs and jump over a turnstile without paying, it’s possible that they were just short of cash and in a hurry. But many of the people who do that are probably going to be willing to break other laws and may be entering the tunnels with that purpose in mind (HotAir).
