Hi friend,

From Yosemite and Joshua Tree National Parks to lesser-known gems like Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and Shaw’s Cove Beach, public lands are part of our identity as Californians, and as Americans.

But they are more than just tourist attractions, recreational opportunities, and natural beauty; public lands are an underutilized powerhouse for solving the climate crisis.

So California Environmental Voters Education Fund and EnviroVoters are doing something new this month. We are dubbing March Public Lands Month to celebrate public lands, spread awareness of their importance, and drive action around protecting specific lands, waters, and species.

Will you help us kick off our first Public Lands Month by signing our petition encouraging California leaders to prioritize conserving, defending, and expanding our forests, mountains, deserts, and waters?

Scientists have also told us that protecting large swaths of public land is one of the most effective ways to address the climate crisis.

Around a quarter of California is currently conserved public land, meaning land owned by the people of California and managed by state and federal agencies. California is leading the way by aiming to conserve 30% of its lands and coastal waters by 2030 (30x30).

Our public lands reduce our carbon emissions, primarily by protecting forests, coastlines, and deserts, promoting natural cycles that help store atmospheric carbon dioxide by sequestering it safely into the ground. They also provide space for renewable energy devotement while conversely limiting areas where corporate polluters are allowed to mine, drill, or log.

Public lands also play a critical role in protecting our water sources. The snowpack and rivers in places like Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks, for example, are important sources of clean drinking water. Sierra forests and meadows play a role in ensuring water quality and reliability for millions of Californians.

Expanding public lands is also an equity issue, friend. Our leaders must make access to these places, where community connects with nature, more equitable and inclusive for everyone living in our state as well.

Protecting public lands must be a top priority for everyone, from voters to politicians to regulators and beyond. Hence our focus on public lands this month!
