During Supreme Court arguments today, Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito signaled that future Republican administrations should use an 1873 law to ban the abortion pill. This came less than two years after Alito wrote the Dobbs decision that overturned Roe vs. Wade.
Elizabeth Warren warned after the hearing, "Let me be clear. This case is about Donald Trump and Republican politicians marching us toward a full-on nationwide abortion ban."
It is a stark reminder that we cannot afford to take any more hits on the Supreme Court. We MUST protect the Democratic majority in the U.S. Senate in 2024.
This Supreme Court is increasingly facing a legitimacy crisis – at a time when our nation can least afford it.
Yesterday, Jon Stewart noted on The Daily Show that the Supreme Court will ultimately decide whether Trump will be held accountable for his crimes. Then he played a clip from ABC News about Clarence Thomas accepting gifts from Republican mega-donor Harlan Crow. The implication was clear.
The New York Times reports that even former Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer is concerned. After speaking with him about his new book out today, the Times notes that, "In earlier interviews, Justice Breyer could be rambling and opaque. This time he was direct. He said he meant to sound an alarm about the direction of the Supreme Court."
These are the top races Democrats must win to stop the Supreme Court from tilting even further toward fascism if Trump wins – and to making sure President Biden can confirm new justices if he is re-elected and the opportunity arises:
Ruben Gallego (Arizona) must defeat extremist Kari Lake to win this seat for Democrats.
Tammy Baldwin (Wisconsin), Sherrod Brown (Ohio), and Jon Tester (Montana) ALL must win re-election in states that now range from purple to red.
Lucas Kunce (Missouri) is our best shot to EXPAND our Senate map -- winning back a seat from Republican Josh Hawley that Democrats held just 6 years ago.
Thanks for being a bold progressive.
