Governor Youngkin Vetos Common Sense Gun Safety Measures Sen. Salim Statement on Veto of SB327 and SB338 March 26, 2024 Today, Governor Youngkin decided to veto my bills SB327 and SB338, along with many other critical pieces of legislation aimed at addressing gun violence in our communities. This reckless action not only disregards the safety and well-being of Virginians but also ignores the overwhelming support for common-sense measures to curb gun violence. SB327 sought to implement reasonable age restrictions on the purchase of certain firearms, ensuring that those under 21 years old cannot access handguns or assault firearms except under specific circumstances. By vetoing this bill, Governor Youngkin is turning a blind eye to the urgent need to prevent tragedies involving firearms and failing to uphold his duty to protect Virginians from harm. Additionally, SB338 aimed to shed light on the devastating effects of gun violence on our communities by directing JLARC to conduct a comprehensive study. By vetoing this bill, Governor Youngkin is silencing the voices of those affected by gun violence and hindering efforts to understand and address this pressing issue. It is deeply hypocritical for Governor Youngkin to claim that public safety is his top priority while simultaneously vetoing crucial gun violence prevention measures. Just last week, he justified his veto of criminal justice reform bills by asserting that public safety must come first. Yet, his actions today demonstrate a blatant disregard for the safety and well-being of Virginians. Last year, the people of Virginia spoke loud and clear in their support for sensible gun violence prevention measures by electing gun sense majorities to the House and Senate. Governor Youngkin's veto is a betrayal of their trust and a failure to fulfill his duty as an elected official. We will not stand idly by while our communities continue to suffer from the devastating impact of gun violence. We will continue to fight for the safety and security of all Virginians, despite the Governor's misguided actions.
