PrEP Discontinuation Among Sexual And Gender Minority People

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a key HIV prevention method, but its efficacy is contingent on continuous use.

In their paper in the March issue of Health Affairs, Yan Guo of the City University of New York and her team of coauthors track PrEP discontinuation among sexual and gender minority people ([link removed] ) .

They find an annual PrEP turnover rate of between 35–40 percent among those in the four-year national cohort study.

The authors conclude that housing instability, prior PrEP discontinuation, lack of health insurance, and younger age are all risk factors for PrEP discontinuation.

They recommend increased support for those at risk for discontinuation.
