Every March, we collectively celebrate the many contributions of women throughout history and across all facets of our society. What began in 1982 as Women’s History Week has grown into a month-long recognition of women and the integral ways they work and have worked to build and sustain families, communities, and this nation.
This year, the Women’s and Fair Practices Departments are proud to celebrate the 50th anniversary of our creation. In 1974, the Women’s Department was established to improve the status of women and their families and to eliminate artificial barriers to the progress of women in government service. This historic milestone that was accomplished by AFGE women not only created history in our union, but has served as a catalyst to help ensure that women will have a voice, a seat, and a space in all aspects of the work that our union does to promote civil, human, women's and workers’ rights on behalf of federal and DC government workers.
