John,
How much time and money did you spend filing your taxes this year? If you’re like most Americans, you spent roughly 11 hours and $200.[1]
That’s because the tax-prep industry has spent millions of dollars lobbying Congress to keep our tax-filing system complicated, allowing them to rake in billions of dollars in profits from customers dependent on them to negotiate the maze.
Tax filing should be free and easy!
When we fought for and won billions of dollars in funding for the IRS in 2022, it included funding to create the first-ever free online tax filing system sponsored by the IRS: Direct File. A Direct File pilot program is now open to taxpayers in a dozen states. And, if it’s successful this year, the hope is that it will be expanded to serve millions more taxpayers next tax season.

The new IRS funding we secured did more than just allow the agency to implement the Direct File system. The extra money is also allowing the IRS to better serve everyday taxpayers in many other ways, while cracking down on wealthy and corporate tax cheats who’ve been getting away with hundreds of billions of dollars worth of tax evasion.
Between 2010 and 2020, congressional Republicans underfunded the IRS, hollowing out the agency and causing the audit rates of millionaires and billionaires to plummet. In fact, in the final year of Donald Trump’s presidency, working families were audited at a higher rate than millionaires:
We need a strong and functioning IRS to hold the wealthy accountable and provide working people with the resources they need to file their taxes easily. This will not only save families time and money, it will make sure that eligible low-income workers are aware of and claim the Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit.

Together, we’re fighting for a tax system that puts working people first.
Thank you for all that you do,
