Tuesday, March 31, 2020 Dear John, On Saturday, I participated in tele-conventions with three Basic Political Operating Units (BPOUs) in the 8th Congressional District. I am certain that you, like me, never could have imagined, a few short weeks ago, a world where we would be in a self-quarantined, social-distance state, and our BPOU conventions could only be conducted safely by mobile phones and computer monitors.
As we as a state and nation grapple to combat COVID-19, our health care heroes are battling on the front lines. We must do all we can to ensure our doctors, nurses, and medical professionals are given the support they need to lead this fight. Congress passed an emergency COVID-19 relief package last week that will provide significant funding and resources to our health care workers to better equip them for this fight. The legislation President Trump quickly signed into law will also provide immediate help to working families and relief for small businesses.
While the new law’s intention was to be targeted and direct, it was outrageous that Nancy Pelosi viewed this national emergency as a bargaining chip to fulfill her liberal wish list that – at first – included funding for Planned Parenthood, expansive tax credits for solar and wind energy, new emission standards for airlines, and $1 billion to expand Obama’s cell phone program. I am pleased she finally caved to public pressure and abandoned her demands.
I don’t have to tell you that we are living in extraordinary times. I know most of you have been inundated with COVID-19 news and, too often, fear wins the day. Please know this: Because of countless great Americans – including so many heroes in Minnesota – we WILL overcome. We WILL recover. We WILL rebuild. And we WILL be an even GREATER country moving forward.
While we are unable to meet in person, I look forward to checking in with more of you this upcoming weekend online at tele-conventions for HD 15A (Milaca-Princeton area), Hubbard, Carlton, and Lake County BPOUs.
In closing, I would like to share a few inspirational words from President John Adams that are rather fitting for these times:
“People and nations are forged in the fires of adversity.”
May you continue to stay safe and healthy. And may God continue to bless America.
Sincerely,
