CAGW and CCAGW Fight to Protect Taxpayers During Coronavirus

While significantly increased spending to the unprecedented coronavirus crisis is understandable, like the $2 trillion bill that Congress just passed, CAGW and CCAGW have been fighting to protect taxpayers with a series op-eds, blog posts, letters to members of Congress and increased social media activity. We are especially concerned that politicians will take advantage of this crisis to pursue their own pet projects and unrelated expenditures. As just one example, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) introduced legislation that would make permanent changes in many programs that will make the government bigger and more intrusive, and she will be pursing them in the next massive spending bill. Later this week, CCAGW will launch an Action Alert campaign demanding that Congress not waste taxpayer dollars on pet political projects or further politicize the government’s response to coronavirus. Read more about what CAGW and CCAGW are doing during the coronavirus outbreak.

Porker of the Month: Rep. Frank Pallone

Watch CAGW's March Porker of the Month Video

Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) has named House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone (D-N.J.) Porker of the Month for trying to push more Americans to smoke by banning flavored vaping products. On February 28, the House passed Rep. Frank Pallone’s bill, The Protecting American Lungs and Reversing the Youth Tobacco Epidemic Act. The bill would prohibit the sale of all flavored tobacco and vaping products and implement a $9.9 billion tax on vaping products over ten years, destroying thousands of jobs. Rep. Pallone pushed his bill despite the overwhelming evidence that vaping and e-cigarettes are more successful than other over-the-counter methods in helping people to quit smoking. In the United Kingdom, where there is no ban on flavored tobacco products, a March 4 report found that “smoking rates are continuing to fall rapidly and harm from vaping is rare.” By pushing his legislation to ban vaping products, Rep. Pallone is blatantly ignoring the empirical success of getting people to quit smoking. For attempting to create an avoidable health catastrophe, Rep Pallone is the March Porker of the Month.
