Legislative Update

Friends and Neighbors,

Attacks on religious freedom continue to be an important issue this week at the capitol. In the dark of night Monday evening the Senate Judiciary Committee moved their bill forward without language to reinstate the religious exemption in the Minnesota Human Rights Act. This rejection is a clear attack on religious freedom, a founding principle of our country and constitution, protected by both the Minnesota and U.S. Constitutions.

The views and actions of religious organizations should be determined by the organizations themselves, not by the state legislature. We will continue to fight for religious freedom and protections under the 1st Amendment. However, we need your assistance. We urge you to make your voices heard to the Majority Leadership in the legislature. It is crucial that they understand that religious institutions should have the autonomy to make decisions based on their own values.

Back in the House, our committee schedules have been packed with both 1st and 2nd deadlines happening today! These deadlines are when bills need to have as least one hearing in both bodies of the legislature to be considered on the floor during the rest of this session. I serve on the Environment and Natural Resources Finance and Policy, Human Services Finance, and Sustainable Infrastructure Policy Committees so while the two finance committees have a slightly later deadline all of the policy committees have been working to prioritize the bills they want to see on the house floor.

Women's Bill of Rights

One important bill that got introduced this week is the Women?s Bill of Rights which I am a coauthor on. This is legislation that would recognize the innate differences between men and women and respect that in situations such as sports, they need their own spaces. Women and girls are getting seriously injured because of the environment that is so afraid to offend anyone we refuse to challenge anyone's identity. This has become a matter of basic safety and this legislation would prioritize that safety.

This week my email inbox has been overflowing with concern over HF 4780 [ [link removed] ]. This bill gives the Commissioner of Natural Resources $20 million of taxpayer dollars to give state-owned land and real property within a mile radius of Upper Red Lake to the Red Lake Band of Chippewa. This legislation would be taking away access to the lake from countless Minnesotans who use the public boat landings and destroy local economies that count on tourism to the lake. I will continue to work to put an end to this legislation that was introduced without any warning.
