Join us for the launch of Fawcett's newest and most detailed report on childcare and read on to meet our exciting speakers.

This report brings together our previous data analysis from five countries who have undergone reform, alongside gathering in-depth, practical knowledge from round-table discussions and expert interviews.

We spoke to international experts to find out what the process of implementing large scale change had really been like and this report applies our findings specifically to England ahead of the 2024 general election.

Meet the speakers

Jemima Olchawski
Jemima is the CEO of the Fawcett Society. She is a social policy expert with 15 years' experience working on issues around social justice and women’s rights. Her career has spanned national charities, local government and a think tank, working to tackle inequalities and improve life chances.

Harriet Harman MP
Harriet joined Fawcett Society as Chair of the board of trustees in 2023.
Harman is the Mother of the House—the title given to the female MP with the longest continuous service—and will step down at the next election after close to 40 years in Parliament. Harman was first elected in 1982, and is currently the MP for Camberwell and Peckham.

Munira Wilson MP
Munira became the Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Education in 2021 and has been MP for Twickenham since 2019.
Meet the Panellists
Katie Ghose
Katie has been Chief Executive of Kids since 2019. She is a non-profit chief executive and experienced board member with nearly three decades experience of leadership and management in the UK voluntary sector. Katie has previously served as chief executive of Women’s Aid Federation of England, the Electoral Reform Society and the British Institute of Human Rights.

Prior to this Katie held public affairs and communications roles in Parliament and in the charity sector at Age Concern England (now Age UK) and Citizens’ Advice. As a barrister in her twenties, she represented migrants and asylum-seekers and went onto fulfil Board roles with several human rights charities, including Asylum Aid, Bail for Immigration Detainees and Stonewall.

Shannon Pite
Shannon is the Communication and External Affairs Director of the Early Years Alliance, the largest early years membership organisation in England.

After training and working as a journalist, Shannon joined the Alliance as editor of the charity's membership magazine: Under 5 magazine, before moving into the organisation’s press and public affairs team and later, leading on communications and external affairs.

In this role, she leads on the organisation's campaigns and government engagement, alongside its press and media work, social media, print and digital communications.

As the mother of a young daughter, she is particularly proud to work for an organisation committed to empowering the early years workforce, supporting families and, above all else, ensuring that the needs of the child are always put first.

Alfie Stirling
Alfie is Director of Insight and Policy at the Joseph Rowntree Foundation leading the evidence, economics and policy teams.

Previously Alfie was Director of Research and Chief Economist at the New Economics Foundation (NEF), leading research teams across economics, environment and social policy. Prior to that, Alfie was senior economist at the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), leading macroeconomic and fiscal policy research for the Commission on Economic Justice. Alfie is a regular contributor in national media through TV, radio, and print.
