New Bills Introduced on Migrant Children's Safety

With the growing crisis of human trafficking and unaccompanied children on the southern border, I have been working on a bill for several weeks to protect these children dropped off in Minnesota.?We must do?all we can to prevent innocent children from falling victim to these crimes here in our state.?HF 4927 [ [link removed] ]?and?HF?4928 [ [link removed] ]?aim to eliminate some of these risks to children who end up in Minnesota with no legal immigration status.?These bills establish parameters and verifications for those who transport these children, from the border to Minnesota, to prevent them from being delivered to people or groups that are involved in human trafficking.

?HF 4927?and HF 4928?establish a screening process in compliance with federal law. Further, nonprofits and nongovernmental organizations that transport unaccompanied minors must verify, with the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, that they are not transferring those individuals to someone under investigation or with a previous criminal history of related crimes.?HF 4928 further adds stricter background check stipulations to potential sponsors who have not resided in Minnesota for at least 10 years. I hope that we can get a hearing, and action that?can help us prevent child trafficking and suffering here in our state. Both bills have been referred to the House Public Safety Finance and Policy Committee where they await a hearing.

Bills on the floor

On Monday, we heard two bills on the House floor:?HF3613 [ [link removed] ]?and?HF 3769 [ [link removed] ]. They are to make corrections for flawed legislation passed last year. The former moves up the implementation date for Metro Mobility budget reporting for the state forecast. The latter fixes issues with last year?s tax bill,?which changed the net operating loss deduction for businesses from 80% to 70%. However, there was an issue with the implementation year, which HF 3769 fixed.?Unfortunately for many businesses who have already filed for returns, this change will force them to spend unnecessary money on amended returns. Republican legislators and I tried to fix this issue earlier in the year and avoid this but were shut down by the DFL majority. Yet another?couple prime examples?of the majority?s rush-it-through-fix-it-later mentality.
