Here's what's going on at USCRI

USCRI has officially opened an office in Nairobi, Kenya. This office is a significant addition to USCRI’s existing network of field offices across the United States, El Salvador, Honduras, and Mexico. For over five decades, USCRI has advocated on behalf of refugees warehoused in camps indefinitely, particularly East Africa.

“USCRI is pleased to expand direct services to protracted refugee camps in East Africa,” said Eskinder Negash, USCRI President and CEO. “Our office in Nairobi will provide social services to improve the health and education of child refugees, as well as advocacy for stronger refugee protections and policies.”

For Women’s History Month, we sat down with women in leadership at USCRI to talk about their careers, the specific work their teams do, and how USCRI helps women and girls. USCRI partners with Horatio Alger Association for Scholarship Program

USCRI is excited to announce the Beacon of Hope Scholarship Program in partnership with the Horatio Alger Association. The scholarship program will provide access to higher education to foreign-born survivors of human trafficking, unaccompanied children, refugees, and asylum seekers for whom there is a pathway to U.S. residency or citizenship.

“…this program ensures displaced people can gain an education they otherwise would not have had access to through scholarship funds and proves that, when given the opportunity, everyone can achieve their dream,” said Eskinder Negash, USCRI President and CEO.

The Humanitarian Situation in Ukraine

February 24, 2024 marked two years of war in Ukraine following Russia’s full-scale invasion of the country in February 2022. Two years of war have devastated the civilian population. Violence, destruction, and violations of international law continue to create dire conditions for civilians living in Ukraine and fuel widespread displacement both in and outside of the country.

USCRI welcomes decision to extend and redesignate TPS for Burma

USCRI welcomes the decision by the Biden administration to extend and redesignate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Burma (Myanmar) for 18 months. The redesignation will protect approximately 9,000 individuals who entered the United States since the military coup in 2021.

“…with conditions so dire in Myanmar, this announcement brings enormous relief,” said USCRI President and CEO Eskinder Negash. “At a time when politics are often prioritized over humanitarian relief, it is commendable to see the Administration uphold its commitments to the people of Myanmar and prioritize protection.”
