UN Security Council Approves Measure Demanding a Ceasefire in Gaza While US Abstains From Voting

Times of Israel: The United Nations Security Council passes a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, after the United States abstains from the vote. The remaining 14 council members vote for the resolution, which was proposed by the 10 elected members of the body. The resolution demands an “immediate ceasefire” for the ongoing Muslim holy month of Ramadan that leads to a “lasting” truce. It also demands the immediate and unconditional release of all the remaining hostages held by terror groups in Gaza since Hamas’s October 7 massacre, which saw thousands of terrorists burst into Israel, killing some 1,200 people and kidnapping another 253, mostly civilians, many amid horrific acts of brutality (Times of Israel). Washington Examiner: Netanyahu agreed last week to send the delegation to meet with U.S. officials regarding Israel’s intent to carry out military operations in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. But the prime minister’s office has decided to call off the delegation’s visit because the U.S. did not use its veto power on the resolution (Washington Examiner).

Mexican President Claims Majority of Fentanyl Produced in the U.S.
Fox News: Mexican President Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador denied claims from the U.S. government that the majority of fentanyl is produced in Mexico and defended his country’s traditional family values as a protection against drug abuse in an interview that aired Sunday.  “You know why we don’t have the drug consumption that you have in the United States? Because we have customs, traditions, and we don’t have the problem of the disintegration of the family.” Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, is a major driver in the deadliest drug crisis the U.S. has ever seen. More than 100,000 deaths were linked to drug overdoses in 2022, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More than two-thirds involved fentanyl or similar synthetic drugs (Fox News). Collin Rugg: Mexico President Andrés Manuel López Obrador calls out the U.S. drug problem, blames the United States for promoting the disintegration of the family. “Fentanyl is produced in the United States, in Canada & in Mexico and the chemical precursors come from Asia” (X).

AMLO made the remarks during a “60 Minutes” interview while talking about the crisis that has unfolded on the U.S. southern border under President Joe Biden, which has been aided by AMLO refusing to do anything to slow down illegal aliens entering his own southern border (Daily Wire). 60 Minutes: The president of Mexico’s proposal for stemming immigration includes: The U.S. commit $20 billion a year to poor countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. Massachusetts Losing $75 Million Monthly on Shelters Due to Migrant Crisis
Daily Wire: Massachusetts is spending about $75 million a month on shelters and is reportedly on track to run out of cash next month as officials struggle to contend with a migrant crisis. Democrat Governor Maura Healey’s administration has not revealed exactly when the money is slated to run out, but it is expected to be sometime in early or mid-April, according to the Boston Herald. Massachusetts has seen an influx of thousands of migrants in recent months that has strained the state’s shelter system as well as its finances. About 7,500 families are currently living in emergency assistance shelters, and another 240 families are currently living at state overflow sites. Those numbers do not take into account the thousands more single migrants and homeless Americans housed in the shelters (Daily Wire). Boston Herald: The Senate voted Thursday to give Healey access to up to $840 million over fiscal years 2024 and 2025 to pay for shelter costs while the House approved earlier this month a $245 million injection only for this fiscal year. Both bills cap time in shelters at nine months, with different rules for extending stays (Boston Herald).

California Fast-Food Restaurants Plan to Cut Jobs, Hours Ahead of Minimum Wage Increase in April
Who could have seen this coming? Wall Street Journal: A California state law is set to raise fast-food workers’ wages in April to $20 an hour. Some restaurants there are already laying off staff and reducing hours for workers as they try to cut costs. Other operators said they have halted hiring or are scaling back workers’ hours. Some pizza-chain operators in California are laying off drivers ahead of the wage law’s start and farming out delivery service to apps. Franchisees for Pizza Hut and Round Table Pizza, a chain of around 400 units founded in Menlo Park, Calif., have said they plan to lay off around 1,280 delivery drivers this year, according to records that major employers must submit to the state before large layoffs. The coming minimum-wage increase for California fast-food workers at bigger chains represents a 25% increase from the state’s broader $16 minimum wage. McDonald’s, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Jack in the Box and other restaurant chains have said they would raise menu prices in California to offset some of the cost. Many California restaurant operators are looking for other ways to cover the cost, like reducing hours, closing during slower parts of the day or serving menu items that take less time to make (Wall Street Journal).
