They're using the same playbook ❌

John,

Long road trips. Expensive flights and hotels. Lost wages.

For far too many families across the South – and increasingly, nationwide – that's the cost of accessing fundamental medical care.

From dangerous new laws restricting gender-affirming care for transgender people to the Supreme Court striking down the national right to an abortion, our country is quickly becoming “Two Americas” – where many families can no longer access life-saving medical care in the states they call home.

This month we teamed up with The Brigid Alliance – a national organization that supports people forced to travel long distances for abortion care – to explain how extremists lawmakers are jeopardizing health care access for a vast swath of American families.

Gender-affirming care and abortion care are both life-saving healthcare supported by nearly all medical professionals, and efforts to restrict them are harmful, cruel, and unnecessary. Read our recent piece in LGBTQ Nation with the Brigid Alliance today, and share it with your network. ([link removed])

We may be talking about two sets of laws – access to reproductive care and gender-affirming care – but for the extremist lawmakers pushing these restrictions, the playbook is the same: Ignore public opinion and use fear to force through political attacks on people and families who just want to access basic care.

When the Campaign for Southern Equality grappled with the surge in laws restricting gender-affirming care for transgender people, we looked to the wisdom of The Brigid Alliance, which for the past five years has helped people navigate challenging abortion restrictions in order to access the care they need. Inspired by their transformative work and the practical support network they're a part of, we launched the Southern Transgender Youth Emergency Project (STYEP), which has supported hundreds of transgender youth and their families in accessing care even in the face of oppressive laws.

An attack on one of us is an attack on us all – and in order to fight back against these extremist attacks, we know the importance of joining hands with our allies in the reproductive justice movement to ensure our lawmakers hear the voices of a majority of Americans who oppose these draconian laws.

Our new piece with The Brigid Alliance lays out how restrictions on abortion and gender-affirming care are harming real people – and offers solutions for how we can all work together to make our voices heard. We hope you take some time to read it today. ([link removed])

When our struggles are interconnected, our advocacy must be, too.

Thank you,
Allison Scott

P.S. 89% of young transgender people in the South live in a state where they are unable to access gender-affirming care. Pitch in $10 or more ahead of March 31's Transgender Day of Visibility – and 100% of your donation will help families access the care they need. ([link removed])
