Dear John:

Equality Now is proud to celebrate the 90th birthday of the revered writer, political activist, and feminist organizer, Gloria Steinem.

Gloria’s association with Equality Now began with our founding over 30 years ago. Over the years, Gloria has supported our mission, and her contributions have been invaluable in advancing our work. With her considered insight, together, we have advocated for vital policy changes and raised awareness about the critical issues that continue to impact women and girls worldwide. We are thankful to be part of her rich legacy and to recognize her as an important part of our own history.

Honoring Gloria today feels especially meaningful during March, Women’s History Month.

In 2022, Equality Now celebrated its 30th anniversary, and we took the opportunity to recognize 30 incredible women and changemakers who made a difference in the fight for women’s and girls’ equality. We celebrated not only Gloria Steinem ([link removed]) , but Wilma Mankiller ([link removed]) , Kimberlé Crenshaw ([link removed]) , and more.

In honor of this occasion, Gloria penned a touching tribute to Wilma, whom she’d met through the Ms. Foundation for Women board. Sue Smalley, Global Board Member, also wrote about Gloria's contributions to Equality Now and the world.

As Women’s History Month comes to a close and our 32nd anniversary approaches, I’m reminded again of our 30 honorees, the women who helped build and support this movement: activists, scholars, writers, lawyers, filmmakers, and more.

Gloria fits many of these categories, having written multiple bestselling books, co-produced documentaries, and delivered transformative lectures. She’s also lent her voice to Equality Now’s podcast ‘We Change the Rules ([link removed]) ’ in which she spoke about activism and the fight for global equality.

Her impact has been and will continue to be felt across generations. Without Gloria Steinem, the world would not be what it is, and women would not have the voice they do. We’re grateful for her continued support and advocacy, and we hope you’ll join us in wishing her a happy birthday.
In solidarity,
S. Mona Sinha
P.S. Listen to ‘We Change the Rules’ now on Apple ([link removed]) or Spotify ([link removed]) to learn about gender inequality and the activists and movements inspiring change. Gloria’s episode is #5: Who Is Driving Change ([link removed]) ?
