Another moderate Republican House member announced last week that he will step down early, bringing the Republican majority down to one.

Hi John,

Another Republican House member – Mike Gallagher – has announced he will resign, bringing the Republican majority down to one. With Democrats controlling the Senate by one vote, bipartisanship is a mathematical requirement to pass legislation.

Yet our broken political system continues to punish cooperation and compromise. After working with Democrats to pass a budget, Speaker Mike Johnson now could be booted from his role by the same fringe actors that got rid of the previous speaker, Kevin McCarthy.

Is it any wonder America’s biggest problems are going unsolved? Is it any wonder that some six in ten Americans are still clamoring for another presidential option in 2024?

Americans see leaders in both parties deciding they’d rather campaign on – rather than solve – our most serious problems. They are looking for leaders who would:

Solve our immigration and border crisis.

- U.S. Border Patrol reports an average of 7,400 migrant encounters every day.
- In addition to the many who escape custody, hundreds of migrants are intentionally released into the country every day in accordance with Biden administration policies.
- The White House spent much of the last three years pretending this wasn’t a problem. Now, far right Republicans in the House refuse to help solve the problem because Donald Trump doesn’t want to give Biden a legislative “win.”

Solve our budget and spending crisis.

- Our national debt is rising by $1 trillion every 100 days and neither Biden or Trump have a credible plan to do anything about it.
- Our spending on interest every year now exceeds our spending on national defense.
- The Social Security Trust Fund is set to go insolvent in 7 years if we do nothing, which could trigger automatic benefit cuts of 24%. That would double the rate of poverty among the elderly.

Solving our cost-of-living crisis.

- Food prices have jumped 25% since the pandemic and housing prices have risen 40%.
- A recent survey found that 60% of Americans struggle to pay for groceries and a record number cannot afford rent.
- Trust in both parties’ handling of the economy is sinking.

The hopes of passing major legislation in Congress this year to deal with these issues are dwindling. Both Trump and Biden say they can be trusted to solve these problems but why should anyone believe them given their failure to address them during their presidencies?

It’s why America needs a third option that will solve these crises the only way they can be solved: through cooperation and compromise across the aisle.

Not only is that a matter of commonsense; it's a matter of basic math in a divided Washington.
