Turning Point USA Faith Contributor and Pastor John Amanchukwu visited the Midland Independent School District to read from the book “PUSH” by author Sapphire. “PUSH” chronicles an incestual relationship between a girl and her father that started when she was seven.
The book contains disturbing descriptions of rape and assault that resulted in the birth of two children. Although this content is enough to unsettle any adult, the book was placed in the district’s high school library.
After reading excerpts from the book, Pastor John told board members, “This needs to be removed tonight. We have six men on this board, and I want to say to these men on this board, if you don’t remove this book, you’re either a punk or a pervert.”
Following Pastor John’s statement, five police officers approached the podium and escorted him out of the meeting. Board Member Michael Booker confronted Pastor John outside of the meeting, stating, “I will get that book out. But I’m letting you know now, I’m no punk, and I’m no pervert.”
