Friend,

The federal tax filing deadline is April 15, and I want to share news about a free new tax preparation tool that is available for Texas residents. The Direct File pilot program is funded by the Inflation Reduction Act, which I voted for to help families save money on everything from energy bills and prescription drugs to tax-preparation fees.

Many people with simple returns will qualify to use Direct File. To qualify, all you need is a Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number for yourself, your spouse, and your kids or dependents. You also need a current driver’s license, state identification card, U.S. passport or passport card. You can check your eligibility here

Taxpayers who make less than $79,000/year who have more complicated taxes (including self-employment income) can use free online tax preparation services from trusted IRS partners. For the full list of free services, click here. Taxpayers who need in-person assistance and make less than $60,000 can also visit one of a dozen Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites in San Antonio. To find a site near you, click here.

The IRS is also offering extended weekly office hours to help with tax issues. The San Antonio office is open 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM Monday-Friday with extended hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 – 8:30 AM and 4:30 – 6:30 PM through April 16th. The office is located at 8122 Datapoint Dr., Suite 210, San Antonio, TX 78229 near the Medical Center. To schedule an appointment, call (844) 545-5640.

Over the years, my office has helped hundreds of families who’ve run into issues with their tax refunds. If you need help after the tax filing deadline, or assistance with any other federal agency, you can contact my office at 210-348-8216 or visit my website here.

Sincerely,
