50% of America's rural hospitals are operating in the red.

For years, rural healthcare has been on a downward slide, but the latest numbers paint a disturbing picture:

  • 418 rural hospitals are now designated as "vulnerable to closure."
  • Over a 10-year period, nearly a quarter of rural hospitals lost obstetrics care.
  • Over half of all rural hospitals are now affiliated with large, corporate health systems as small or independent hospitals faced insolvency.

Years of spiraling rural health care has resulted in rural communities being sicker, poorer, and less likely to have adequate health care than their urban and suburban counterparts.

Still, Republican elected officials who represent these areas aren't stepping up to stop the bleeding.

10 states – mostly rural and conservative – still have not adopted Medicaid expansion and their Republican leadership has spent more than a decade fighting against it.

If our rural hospitals are on life support, so is the future of rural America.

Health care is a top priority for us – and anyone who is vying for votes in rural America, whether it's for the House, the Senate, or the Presidency, better be willing to act immediately to save our towns, economies, and families.
