Dear John:

As you may know, State Trooper Ryan Londregan was charged with felony counts of second-degree unintentional murder, first-degree assault, and second-degree manslaughter after he shot and killed Ricky Cobb II. An expert determined that Trooper Londregan followed his training and acted lawfully to save his partner's life. Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty ignored this expert in order to advance her politically motivated and unjust prosecution.

Mary Moriarty has weaponized her position to wrongfully charge Trooper Londregan and this case needs to be taken out of her hands. Last week, I led a letter from the Minnesota Republican delegation to Governor Walz expressing our outrage at the demonization of law enforcement, and specifically Moriarty's abuse of power and wrongful charge Trooper Londegan. The letter also makes the governor aware that we are requesting the House Judiciary Committee investigate the prosecution.

Biden's Budget Would Hurt Farmers

Last week marked the official first day of Spring, whether it feels that way in the Seventh District or not. It also, fittingly, marked National Ag Day, and I would like to extend a heartfelt "thank you" to every one of you working in the agricultural industry across western Minnesota. You all keep this world turning, and we are grateful every day.

Unfortunately, according to the White House's proposed budget, it appears President Biden does not feel the same way. His budget would increase federal government spending at the expense of our small businesses, famers, and producers, including would new tax hikes and restricting the like-kind exchanges that allow these businesses to improve operations.

My fellow Republicans and I understand that, rather than increasing the burden on rural economies, the federal government needs to take responsibility and rein in its spending. I've joined my colleagues in sending a letter to President Biden urging him to work with us to support small business owners and family farms, not hinder them.

Defending the Pro-Life Community in the Senate Judiciary Committee

Senate Democrats held a hearing titled "The Continued Assault on Reproductive Freedoms in a Post-Dobbs America" last week, and I was honored to be invited by Senator Lindsey Graham to testify in defense of the pro-life community.

Many elected Democrats cater to the fringes of their party when it comes to abortion. For example, they vote for legislation that would allow abortion on demand through all nine months of pregnancy, despite the fact that only 10% of voters support this position.

Republicans in the pro-life community agree with most Americans, and we are deeply understanding of the challenges expectant mothers face. We stand with them and are doing everything we can to empower women to confidently choose life.

Ways and Means Field Hearing in Denton, TX

The Ways and Means Committee held a field hearing in Denton, TX, called "Access to Health Care in America: Ensuring Resilient Emergency Medical Care."

We heard from a panel of medical responders, patients, and hospital officials about challenges and opportunities in the industry. These hearings are so helpful, because members are able to get out of Washington and see what is really happening across the country. We learn from experts and build a greater understanding of the issues, which helps us find common ground on important policy decisions.

Congressional Art Competition

I encourage high school students from Minnesota’s Seventh Congressional District to participate in the annual Congressional Art Competition. This longstanding, non-partisan tradition is a wonderful opportunity for students from across the district to showcase their creativity and hard work. Winners will have their work on display in my Moorhead, Willmar, and Washington, D.C. offices, and the first place winner will have their work hung in the U.S. Capitol, where it will be seen by members of Congress, staff, and thousands of visitors from across the world.

The deadline for submission is April 26th. For more information, please visit my website
