Welcome to the March issue of COPE Digest!
In the December ([link removed]) year in review ([link removed]) , we highlighted COPE's efforts to promote dialogue among publishers, editors, and universities. We're pleased to share a new flowchart for research institutions navigating journal enquiries, together with the updated Guidelines on "Cooperation between research institutions and journals regarding research integrity cases". These resources have been developed by COPE Members representing research institutions and publishers to ease collaboration when investigating integrity cases.

A journal editor or publisher raises an ethical issue or concern about an article either before or after publication. The flowchart offers the research institution a step by step process on handling the issue.

Ivan Oransky of Retraction Watch and Crossref's Ed Pentz join Trevor Lane to discuss the acquisition of the Retraction Watch database. They talk about the benefits to the community and how this partnership improves access to the data by authors, readers and publishers. The conversation moves on to the wider picture of researcher incentives and trust signals.

Cary Moskovitz, Director of the Text Recycling Research Project, shares his expertise on the topic of text recycling at the next of our Lightning Talk series.
Over the past six years, the Text Recycling Research Project has conducted empirical studies to better understand text recycling in the research context and used what they have learned to develop guidelines and informational resources for editors, authors and instructors. It's now time for editors and publishers to clarify their organisations practices regarding the legality of text recycling.

** INTRODUCTION TO PUBLICATION ETHICS

At this online workshop, held in February, Trevor Lane and Anubhav Pradhan reviewed the Ethics Toolkit and other COPE resources. They introduced the audience to the principles of publication ethics and how to use the guidance and tools available to embed publication ethics in a journal's daily practice.
The workshop highlighted common issues encountered by journal editors. Using real cases brought to COPE by members. Trevor and Anubhav asked the audience how they would respond, and talked through the different routes they could take to resolve issues.
The same workshop with Trevor and Siri Lunde Stromme, recorded during Publication Integrity Week, is available to watch again.

The Ethics Toolkit, introduced at the online workshop, is an easy-to-use guide to publication ethics practices. Use COPE's toolkit with a checklist to help monitor your progress in developing your guidelines and processes.

** PAPER MILLS MEETING: WCRI2024, ATHENS
3 JUNE 2024

Attendees of the World Conference on Research Integrity (WCRI2024) are welcome to register for an in-person meeting of WCRI2024 attendees with active interests in paper mills, organised by Jennifer Byrne. The meeting will be held at the Megaron Athens International Conference Centre.
This meeting will be free of charge, and will provide an opportunity for WCRI2024 attendees to network and learn about initiatives underway at COPE, STM and elsewhere. Attendees who are presenting relevant talks or posters at WCRI2024 will be welcome to highlight these presentations to the group. There will also be opportunities to briefly describe other projects that won’t be presented at WCRI2024. Most presentations will not involve slides, to maximise the number of people who can share their work.

The Center of Biomedical Research Transparency (CBMRT) conference is for research institutions, publishers, editors, foundations, associations, biopharma, CROs, government agencies, nonprofits. The conference is covering a range of topics related to data integrity, transparency, science policy, reproducibility, ethics and regulations with AI.
Dan Kulp, COPE Chair, has been invited to speak at a plenary session with a panel discussion on publication ethics.
