Many Athletic Trainers are already engaged in the
STOP THE BLEED® campaign, using it to build resilience in the athletic community. The Coalition’s Instructor Program is designed to empower Athletic Trainers and other professionals to get involved by making it easier to apply for a license and to support approved instructors with all of the resources they need.
You never know when disaster or injury could strike an athlete, especially with contact sports.
You could save a life.
Athletic Hockey Trainer Rachel Leahy came on the
STOP THE BLEED® Podcast to describe how she used STOP THE BLEED® skills to during a life-threatening bleed from one of her players:
“About 5 minutes left in the second period, there was a really big hit at center ice. One of our other teammates Noah Wilson had made a really big hit to an opposing player. That player fell forward and his leg came up in the air, and at the same exact time one of our other teammates Eric Hus was skating behind him and perfect storm, just got cut right across the side of his neck by this player’s skate… He skates immediately back to the bench. Here I am watching center ice, you could barely tell it even happened. I’m making sure Noah who made the hit gets up okay and is skating as he should. Then I see a small trail of blood on the ice, I lean forward and ask “what is that?”. At this point, Eric is approaching our bench…our players are getting panicked because they see whats going on, I jump over the boards at that point onto the ice and I see that it’s Eric.
I start running towards Eric…he looks up at me. And the side of his neck looked like it was falling away from his face. And I realized what it was that I was running towards, that we had a neck laceration…one of the most severe injuries that you could attend to… I ran towards him, started applying pressure, tried to close the wound as best as I could…I need to get him to EMS immediately. We just immediately ran that way…”
