John,
At the heart of it, politics is about values. And when we look at the first few months of this new National Government, it’s clear that their values are very different to the ones that define and motivate our Labour movement.
Fairness, respect, unity and compassion – those are Labour’s values.
We believe in equality and the idea that all those who work hard should be able to get ahead, enjoy the fruits of their labour, and create a better life for themselves and their families.
We believe that we’re stronger together – and that when we all look out for each other, we’re all better off.
These values inform Labour’s vision for New Zealand’s future and the actions that we’ll take to get there.
Right now, this future feels out of reach. In the last few months, we’ve seen the National Government prioritise tax cuts for landlords while threatening to cut free lunches for school kids. They’ve rolled back workers’ rights, reduced support for the most vulnerable, and reversed our smokefree laws – a win for the tobacco lobby at the expense of Kiwis’ health.
This Government values self-interest, greed and division. And with Christopher Luxon talking about tough love for others while claiming a $1,000 a week housing allowance he doesn’t need, it’s clear that their sense of entitlement comes from the top. We’ve got to fight back against it.
I know we will. That’s why I’m optimistic about New Zealand’s future, because what it looks like is up to all of us.
Yesterday I gave a speech that set out Labour’s job over the next two years. I spoke about leading with our values. I said we would do some bold new thinking to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow, and to deliver on the priorities that matter most to Kiwis.
You can hold me to that. At the next election, Labour will be match fit with new ideas and new solutions.
But it’s a team effort, John. Your time, voice, and ideas are what build up our Labour movement, and there is no time better than now to step up. I hope you’re with us.
If you have a few minutes, you can read the full speech here <[link removed]>.
Thanks,
Chris
