No one is immune to the toll that the COVID-19 pandemic is taking on our City. Folks we know have fallen ill and many have lost their jobs.

Earlier this month, Governor Andrew Cuomo placed a moratorium on foreclosures and evictions across New York State. Many are facing a new reality and difficult financial choices in the weeks ahead. 

This week it's the rent check. Next week it's the property tax bill. And not to mention the mortgage payment, utility bills, maintenance fees, etc. 

S.8140 is a start. Senator Kavanagh’s bill provides emergency rent assistance to our neighbors so that they can remain afloat while we address the long term impact of the coronavirus. There is no reason anyone should be financially penalized because of this crisis. As a city, state, and society, we’re better than that. 

But, even this doesn't go far enough. 

We need to take care of our housing crisis, which has been completely exacerbated by the coronavirus outbreak. We need to provide emergency relief of ALL housing financial obligations for people with lost income due to COVID-19.

Protecting and standing up for each other is the only way we’re going to get through this outbreak.

Friend, I urge you to please continue following CDC and WHO guidelines. Stay safe and healthy. We will get through this together.
