CMS Lifts Restrictions on CRNAs Nationwide
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on March 30 issued temporary orders to waive the requirements that certified registered nurse anesthetists must operate under the supervision of a physician. The move is among several by CMS that will allow local hospitals to rapidly expand treatment capacity. CMS also urges states to adopt measures in their emergency preparedness plans that may allow care for more people.

Nurses at the White House and Beyond
In addition to stories from the frontlines and bedsides, Charting Nursing’s Future also reports on responses at the institutional level. Among them: On March 18, 12 national nursing organizations spoke with the coronavirus task force during a White House meeting. Meanwhile, nursing schools are canceling student rotations.

Florida Updates Laws, Provides Improved Health Care
Florida’s governor has signed a long-sought law that will improve care for the state’s 21.5 million residents. The law does not take effect till July 1, but the COVID-19 crisis might well have been on lawmakers’ minds as they quickly passed measures that had long been considered.

ANA Resource Page Provides Survey, COVID-19 Tips
“Preparedness is key,” writes the American Nurses Association on the resource page it has developed as the novel coronavirus disease spreads. The page includes information for nurses and the public, with the goal of helping keep nurses, health teams, and the larger community safe. It also asks nurses to respond to its workplace survey.

New Deadlines for AARP Purpose Prize, Community Challenge
AARP has extended deadlines for two funding opportunities. Applications for the AARP Purpose Prize, which celebrates people 50 and older who are building a better future for all,are now due April 30. Applicants for the AARP Community Challenge, which seeks ideas that can help communities become more livable, have until May 15.

New - HRSA Accepting Applications for Nurse Corps Scholarships
The Nurse Corps Scholarship Program, part of the Health Resources & Services Administration, offers funding to students in professional nursing degree programs in exchange for service in high-need, underserved communities. Knowing how to better care for people with complex health and social needs takes training. Now is the chance to join some 600 students from 40 schools across the U.S who have been trained through the Interprofessional Student Hotspotting Learning Collaborative. Calling all registered nurses (RNs) and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs): hTave you served for at least one year on a board of directors with fiduciary responsibilities? You may be eligible to participate in a study, approved by the University of Massachusetts Boston Institutional Review Board, to test an instrument aimed at measuring the engagement of nurses on boards.
