Dear John,
One of the most common questions I get about our work at Inequality Media is this: “Aren’t you just preaching to the choir?”
I love this question. Because the answer, which I’m immensely proud to report, is “No.”
In fact, our data show that an unusually large percentage of our millions of social media viewers and followers are self-identified conservatives and independents, which gives us a truly unique opportunity to change minds and decisively move public opinion.
That’s why I’m so thrilled to tell you about the test results we’ve just gotten back regarding some of our latest videos.
The team at Inequality Media has been testing a series of new videos aimed at persuading conservatives and independents to support progressive economic policies, such as raising taxes on big corporations to fund Social Security and health care.
Our hope is that the people who see these videos will move in our direction by maybe two or three points. But our latest series of videos are moving the numbers by 10 to 15 points – including among the conservative and independent Americans we need to bring over to our side.
We need to get these videos in front of as many people as humanly possible, so I’m asking you today: Will you make a donation to help power Inequality Media and get these videos in front of as many people as possible?
We started Inequality Media eight years ago with the goal of building public support for progressive policies through social media. Our theory of change was that we could have more success bypassing the corporate media filter and going directly to the people with clear and engaging video explainers and posts.
That idea has proven to be a huge success. Today we have nearly 700,000 followers on TikTok, over 1.2 million on Instagram, and over 3.3 million on Facebook. Social media strategy expert Kyle Tharp named Inequality Media one of the top political brands on Instagram on TikTok.
But the goal isn’t to just have a lot of fans and followers. The goal is to educate, and to change minds. And we’ve developed a strategy to find the best, most persuasive content to push out to the public.
The way it works is that we take a random sample of people on social media and split the group in half. One group gets shown a video that’s totally neutral, like a cat video or a tutorial on glassblowing. The other group gets shown one of our videos about why big corporations should be broken up to combat inflation or why we should raise taxes on the rich.
Then we ask each group a series of questions about where they stand on key issues. The difference between how much support we have among the two groups shows us how persuasive our video is and how much our video is moving the needle.
Here’s the amazing part: the most recent videos we tested are moving the numbers so much that the public opinion experts who advise us say they’ve never seen anything like it.
We must get these videos out to as many people as possible right now. So here’s my request: Will you make a donation to help power Inequality Media?
Thank you,
Robert Reich
