Friends,
I hope you’re doing well. I wanted to reach out to you about an exciting anniversary – today marks 14 years of the Affordable Care Act! I was deeply proud to vote for it, and I never get tired of hearing how it has helped Americans.
In the last 14 years, this law has lowered costs for Virginians and saved countless lives, as millions of Americans got coverage for the first time. I’m particularly proud that Virginia took advantage of the historic opportunity to expand Medicaid through the ACA, giving 685,400 Virginians access to coverage through Medicaid.
Across the country, 135 million Americans (including 3.4 million Virginians) with pre-existing conditions have protections they need thanks to the ACA. Sixteen million Americans (and 346,000 Virginians) are now enrolled through the Marketplace, a record-setting accomplishment. For decades to come, this historic law is going to save Americans money and make it more convenient and easy for folks to access health care. Interested in reading more about exactly how this law has helped Virginians? Here’s a great one-pager.
Yet Democrats haven’t rested on our laurels since passing the ACA because it’s clear there’s more work to do to continue lowering health care costs for Americans. I was also a proud supporter of the Inflation Reduction Act, which built on the work of the ACA to slash insulin costs, cap all out-of-pocket prescription drug costs for seniors, and lower premiums. Over the next few years, more provisions of this law will go into place, continuing to lower costs for Americans that just want to be able to access care affordably.
Listen, I know the health care system still isn’t perfect or perfectly affordable. Yet I’m deeply proud of the historic accomplishments of the ACA and IRA, and I’m going to keep fighting to lower costs, expand access to coverage, make Medicare work better for seniors, expand telehealth, and promote access to mental health care, too. If you want to reach out to me about health care or another issue that is important to you, I encourage you to email me using the form on my Senate website. Sincerely,
