Fourteen years ago today, President Barack Obama signed the Affordable Care Act (ACA) into law. This historic legislation made healthcare more accessible for over 40 million Americans.
As a pediatrician and person with Type 1 diabetes, I understand how impactful this legislation has been for Americans. Now 92% of Americans have insurance that covers pre-existing conditions. And for the tens of millions of hard-working families across this country who weren't insured, the ACA has given them the security of affordable insurance and access to medical care.
In 2017, Congressional Republicans announced their plans to overturn the Affordable Care Act. Seeing the danger this would pose to my patients and families across America, I joined three other doctors from my clinic in taking action. We held an urgent meeting with our representative to explain how the ACA helped protect the people in this very District – and yet two days later, our congressman betrayed WA-08 and voted to overturn the ACA.
That was the final straw for me.
Sensing I could do more for the good for the children and families of Washington's 8th District, from a seat in the House of Representatives than I ever could in the four walls of my exam room, I packed up my office and left the job I loved to run for Congress.
Thanks to the support of this incredible grassroots team, we flipped WA-08 blue for the first time ever, and kept it blue in 2020 and 2022. Since then, I've been fighting to keep the ACA alive through multiple attempts by extreme Republicans to repeal it.
In fact, in the last Congress, with Democrats in charge, we improved the ACA! We made health insurance more affordable and gave Medicare the power to negotiate the cost of prescription drugs. And I’m the sponsor of a bill to allow people to buy into Medicaid.
Despite our progress and the benefits the ACA has provided to millions of American families, Speaker Mike Johnson and House Republicans continue to make repealing the ACA a top priority of their legislative agenda.
As your congresswoman, I'll always fight back against these attacks and work to ensure that every person has access to the care they need. But I need your support to continue this important fight.
