The lower your net worth, the harder it is to run for office. Our political system has made it easy for millionaires to run, but difficult for everyone else.
So trust me when I say, this has been hard for me: I only make $357 a week as Mayor of Hagerstown. Before this, I worked as a forklift driver, a front desk receptionist, in retail, and in warehouses, too.
All that means I can’t self-fund my campaign, or call up a wealthy network like so many other candidates in this race. But it also means my perspective is needed now more than ever in Congress.
I knew that the odds would still be stacked against me in this race as a working-class candidate. But while my opponents have millionaire friends, I have a grassroots army of people like you, John, who I know are more than enough.
