The Hill reports, "Progressive Rep. Andy Kim (D-N.J.) has scored some notable wins in his effort to buck the party establishment in New Jersey’s increasingly surprising US Senate race, raising the possibility of an upset in the June Democratic primary."
If you're just getting up to speed on this race, here's what's going on and why this is so big:
Last summer, the Department of Justice indicted Democratic Senator Bob Menendez on serious bribery and corruption charges. They made public reams of evidence including cash and gold bars stashed in his house.
Very shortly after that, Andy Kim announced that he would give up the House seat he flipped from red to blue to run for Senate against Menendez.
Andy told PCCC members and reporters why on a Zoom call: "The Senate majority is razor thin. The idea that the Senate seat from New Jersey could potentially flip to the Republicans if we nominate somebody who has these serious allegations -- that is not something we can do." He said Democrats need to stand for integrity as a contrast to Trump.
Later that Fall, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy's wife Tammy (a former Republican) entered the race, backed by the governor's political connections and a super PAC headed by a big real-estate developer and a big lobbyist prepared to spend big money to defeat Andy. The media immediately anointed her the frontrunner.
We warned at the time, "With 2024 looming and democracy on the line, Dems must REJECT CORRUPTION EVERYWHERE. And nepotism is NOT the answer to corruption."
Now, in county after county, Democratic voters are siding with Andy Kim even as establishment politicians try to muscle in his opponent. This past weekend, the Mayor of Jersey City switched his endorsement to Andy – saying he's running the better campaign with a clearer anti-corruption message.
With New Jersey's primary looming, Andy Kim needs grassroots support. The stakes are high. We don't want to imagine a world in which Democrats fight to victory in tough reelection races in states like Ohio and Montana – only to have Republicans take over the Senate anyway because New Jersey goes with nepotism and then loses in November.
