John, can I share something personal with you?

Today marks the 14th anniversary since the Affordable Care Act was signed into law, and I'm reflecting on how this legislation has positively impacted millions of families.

When my wife and I decided to start our family, we had no health insurance. I was a law student at the time and our daughter was born with a serious health problem.

After countless hospital stays and overdue medical bills, we were left with the choice of enrolling in Medicaid or declaring bankruptcy because we couldn’t afford to pay the $10,000 we owed. For the better part of two years, my wife and I visited the hospital’s welfare clinic alongside other uninsured families.

I'll never forget this experience and I didn't want to go through that again or have anybody else go through it. That’s why the Affordable Care Act was so personal to me.

But right now, Republicans are attacking our health care, suggesting cuts to Medicare, and threatening the protections for people with pre-existing conditions. If Mitch McConnell and Republicans flip the Senate, they could roll back our progress and take our country back to a place where insurance companies, once again, write all the rules.

I fought against Republican efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act before, and I will continue to defend it. But I can't do it alone. I need your help to keep up this fight in the Senate.
