Yesterday, the House of Representatives passed legislation to stop funding UNRWA, the agency providing urgently needed food and humanitarian assistance to starving Palestinians. The bill also includes $3.8 billion American taxpayer dollars to Israel’s military, which gets sent each year.
This isn’t what the American people want. A vast majority of voters across demographic backgrounds support an immediate and permanent ceasefire. Despite this widespread support, too many members of Congress are silent in the face of the Israeli government’s atrocities.
Why? As Jewish Voice for Peace Action wrote: “For too long, AIPAC and its Republican megadonors have demanded our elected leaders unconditionally support the Israeli military and government.”
Leaders of AIPAC’s Super PAC bragged that it was “dollar for dollar, the largest contributor to candidates in the 2022 midterm elections.” That year, AIPAC’s network spent more than $5 million trying to defeat me and pro-peace champion Summer Lee. They’re planning to spend a lot more in this critical election year, but Summer Lee and I won’t be intimidated or silenced.
Now we have just one month left until Summer Lee’s first re-election to Congress. In Summer’s congressional district, an AIPAC-backed group (which is bankrolled by one of the country’s top Republican donors) is running ads attacking Summer and supporting her AIPAC-recruited opponent.

Jewish Voice for Peace Action, IfNotNow, Justice Democrats, and other groups just launched a campaign calling on the Democratic Party to reject AIPAC.
AIPAC has endorsed far-right insurrectionists who tried to overthrow our government, and the group is also undermining our democracy by spending millions from Republican megadonors to interfere in Democratic primary elections.
Because our Squad dares to vote and speak for human rights for everyone, AIPAC is recruiting and funding right-wing challengers to try to defeat us. Summer Lee’s opponent has even encouraged Republicans to register as Democrats in order to vote against Summer next month.
Summer Lee’s re-election is coming up the soonest among our Squad: Her state of Pennsylvania will vote on April 23. This is her first re-election to Congress, and we need to keep her here holding our government accountable and demanding the transformative changes our communities need.
