URGENT ACTION REQUIRED - YOUR PUBLIC COMMENT IS NEEDED BY APRIL 15TH TO STOP THE PROPOSED MEGA PRISON IN LETCHER COUNTY

John,

It's frankly unbelievable, yet here we are again. For nearly two decades, Congress has been doggedly pursuing the construction of the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Eastern Kentucky — a gigantic proposed new prison with a staggering $505 million price tag. Despite clear opposition from the public and multiple administrations, the project refuses to die. And our worst fears may be slowly realized as the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) is moving forward with the next step in the construction process.

But among the bad, there is a shining opportunity to finally kill this monster, but we need your help to get it done. The FBOP has opened a 45-day review period, giving us until April 15th to voice our concerns. Public comments are a crucial aspect of the democratic process, allowing us as individuals and communities to influence decisions that affect us all. They can't ignore us if we speak together, loudly and clearly. This is our moment to stand united and voice our concerns.

First, Send Us Your Public Comment.

Then Share Your Comment On March 28th.Why Your Comment Matters:

Your Voice Counts: Every submission is reviewed and must be addressed and considered, making your input a powerful tool for change.

Strength in Numbers: A flood of opposition can't be overlooked. Together, we can show the overwhelming public dissent against this project.

Before you craft your comment, consider the profound implications of the proposed prison:

  • Over-Incarceration Concerns: Adding to Kentucky's already high incarceration rate without addressing root causes is a step backward.
  • Economic Missteps: Similar projects have failed to deliver promised economic benefits, leaving local communities bearing the costs.
  • Environmental Risks: Building on a former coal mine presents serious health hazards, further degrading our environment.
  • Community Impact: The strain on local infrastructure and the potential tax increases cannot be overstated.
  • Employment Myths: Past projects show that the promise of local jobs often falls short, failing to provide significant employment opportunities to residents.
